Title: Coast Sentinels
Pastel
Size: approx 10-1/2 X 13-1/2
I thought I’d make the work of getting pastels completed and ready for hanging on Thursday by including some process shots of the last one. I think it’s been awhile since I’ve done this. Anyway, as you can see, this is a scene of Eucalyptus trees on a cliff overlooking the pacific. This is not an uncommon site in Southern California, believe me. Once people started planting the Eucalyptus, they just couldn’t stop. Like the also prevalent Palm Tree, the Eucalyptus is not native to the area, but you would never know it. I think they actually fit the landscape here even better than the Palms, but that’s just my opinion.

Just as the hills around Southern California are blanketed with carpets of poppies and Purple Lupine in the spring, so Texas is blessed with meadows of Blue Bonnets.
I may not get all the new pastels up on Thursday (I have plenty framed and ready from the Spring Art Show!), but if not, I will go in and exchange them when they are done. I’m trying hard to meet the deadline of mid-day on Thursday, but I’d rather be happy with the paintings than put them up before they are ready. I’ll be in this location for two months, so …who knows? I may even exchange some more.

June Mountains

I’ve kept myself busy the last couple of months making a quilt for my granddaughter’s first birthday, greeting my son & his friend Blair at the conclusion of the AIDS Life Cycle 7 day ride from SF to LA, entertaining said very active grandchild and generally goofing off. (It’s summer, isn’t it?)
But now it’s time to get serious and make new art…..as if I needed a reason! I’ll be displaying 7 paintings (probably all or mostly pastels…sometimes a watercolor creeps in there when I’m not looking)at the Gateway Commercial Bank as part of the Lakewood Artists Guild’s “Art About Town” on-going event. A couple of months ago, I was in a chiropractor’s office in Los Alamitos. The bank location is just a little bit closer at 4146 Woodruff Ave., Lakewood……for those who may choose to stop by.
This first painting is, of course, celebrating our gorgeous California Poppies as they spread their wonderful spring color along our mountain slopes. Please enjoy!

Unfortunately, I have no idea what these flowers are. I was going through my collection tonight to choose something that might be done quickly, saw them, chose them and here they are. I’ve been neglecting my daily painting, and it really shows ( I think ) in the brush work and color, but painting is like learning to play the clarinet (that’s Chick’s thing), if you don’t practice, it’s harder to reach your goals. I’ve read columns by writers that say the same thing. Rather obvious, I guess. I just realized that it applies to jumping rope as well. So…….lesson learned (hopefully).
I’m hoping to have some pet portraits to show soon and maybe an announcement about them and the AIDS ride that my son, Thom, is part of, but I need to hold that for a few days.
My biggest pressure right now is getting some paintings completed for the Pan American Fiesta to be held here in Lakewood on May 8th and 9th. I’m sharing a booth with another member of the Lakewood Artists Guild. I do have some pastels you’ve already seen, but I’m determined to get lots of new work (ok, ok, some work) done for it. DESPITE the constant winds attacking my allergies, I have to say. The weather is sunny during the day and beautiful…..I just wish I could enjoy the winds. We’ll all miss them come August!!

Here’s another group of small drawings done on a 3X5 spiral pad of Canson with a Stylist ink pen. I keep dreaming about color pastel paintings, but I’m still having fun with these. I hope you enjoy them!
This is an oriental poppy called “Coral Sea”. Guess the color?

It’s been a busy holiday season and I hope it was wonderful for you all. Presents and food and family ruled, but not necessarily in that order. It was out first Christmas with our new granddaughter, Zoe (7 months) and it was heavenly! BUT, I didn’t get much artwork done. Let’s see….turkey…..art…..turkey….art…..it was tough! The choice, not the turkey!
My New Year’s almost Resolution is to try to keep up the daily art, so I decided that if I couldn’t stop and paint, I could at least draw a little. I gave myself a Christmas present (well, one of them) of a 5 X 3 spiral sketch pad by Canson and a new Stylist Pen (one of my favorite drawing pens….like the flair). The pad and pen are below. The first 4 days of drawings follow.
By the way, I got this idea from my son, Thom Chiaramonte, who makes small sketches on post-its. I think they have helped him through many a conference call in S.F. His are all on the subject of robots (I think they are all that). You would enjoy his sketches and his sense of humor. His site for these drawings is: whatitoleyou.com. Have fun.

The Poinsettias seem especially nice this year. I can’t imagine Christmas without them. Here’s one from my diningroom table. The painting process is below:
Here is my last minute set up….we’re all in a holiday rush, right? I took a picture of the plant and stood it on my table easel to paint from. It was easier tonight than trying to set up lighting and painting the actual plant. As you can see, for this watercolor I’m painting each petal and leaf individually wet-in-wet. I decided not to take the time to paint a background, although I may go back and do that later.
This shot show the Winsor Newton travel set I’m always referring to as well as my 5.5 X 8.5 drawing pad. You may be able to tell that I tape 3 of the edges down to the pack to keep the paper from buckling while the paper is wet.

You all know my motto…..”when in doubt, paint flowers”!! I have been working on the 100 paintings challenge on Wet Canvas and in my case, that means pastels. While thinking about the next version, I got side tracked reading Elizabeth Mowry’s “The Pastelist’s Year”. She is head and shoulders my favorite pastel artist ….and not a bad writer either. So, I thought I’d do a small watercolor tonight. The image is approximately 4 X 6. Once again using Winsor Newton watercolors in my 7X9 sketch book. I definitely need to keep practicing using watercolor. It’s the medium I need to work looser. But, fuchsias are year around happy flowers. So, I hope you enjoy!
