Red Barn

When I was a little girl, I grew up in the country outskirts of Roseburg, Oregon.  Nearby our house were several fields just being left fallow,  filled with bushes and wild grass and perfect places to play with our dog.  Up a slight slope in the nearest field was an abandoned barn and climbing it’s ladders and using my imagination to think up stories wasn’t a bad way to spend time.   This barn is actually painted from a photo taken on one of my husband and my cross-country trips.   It doesn’t really look like the childhood barn, but close enough.

It was completed on Fabriano Tiziano pastel paper (8/1/4 X 11 3/4) using my usual mixture of Unison, Ludwig, Sennelier and Rembrandt.

I have to say that I’m not really excited about my results on the Fabriano paper and would love to see comments from anyone else that uses it.

Pastel Pond

I’ve been doing a lot of sketching lately and will post them soon, however the pastel bug bit me good this week.  I started this Tuesday and I “think” I finished it tonight, however living with it for a day or two may induce me to make some changes as I’m not thoroughly happy with it.  We’ll see….I go back and make changes to paintings all the time.     This is an 8″ X 12″ on  Canson paper using mostly Unisons and Ludwig pastels.

Below are a couple of shots showing my usual way of working.  First, very loosely drawing in area with a pastel pencil and then with landscapes working mostly from top to bottom.  Then I go  back and start changing, adding or subtracting items and color.   I was aiming for a very loose image which I think this qualifies.  In fact, I’m thinking I may go in and sharpen some detail.

Enjoy and please comment if you wish!

In start with the sky in landscapes as it is the source of light and all else follows.

December Drawings

Well, as you can tell, the past few weeks have been hectic and I haven’t gotten too much done during this time.   The drawings above were done with a sepia pen on 3-1/2 X 4-1/2 sketchbook that I carry with me in the hopes of grabbing a moment or two.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and enjoy the drawings.

Painted Desert – Pastel

Pastel on Sennelier Pastel Paper using primarily Unisons, Ludwig and Rembrandt pastels and based “quite” loosely on a photo taken some years ago in Arizona.  Seems like I’ve been concentrating mostly on pastel landscapes, so I’m determined to get back to what this blog was originally  for……and that was to try different materials and subjects and just have fun.  Haven’t decided what the next one will be, but I promise it will be different!

Enjoy!

Autumn River

Well, it’s been a busy time (and,if you like the holidays as much as I do, it will be even busier!  I  am going try to set aside time each day and get more done…makes me feel more relaxed too in this hectic time.

The painting above is 8 X 10 on Sennelier Pastel Paper using primarily Unisons and Ludwig pastels…..yes, they are my favorite.   There are some touches here and there done with harder pastels, but principally just the two.

I hope you enjoy!

From Pears to Peaks

We’ve had two days of rain, so it felt like time for a fall picture.   8 X 10 using Unisons and Ludwigs on Strathmore paper.   Enjoy!

Midwest Farm

This is the smallest landscape that I’ve completed in pastel (5.5 X8.5),  but the size didn’t stop it from being voted First Place in Lakewood Artist Guild’s September meeting last night.  Although I have received ribbons from paintings that I entered in our Spring and Fall shows with professional judges, there was something really great getting the votes from my fellow guild members!

Golden Fields in Pastel

Seems like we should be thinking of fall (my favorite season) about now even though we’re in the 90′s in SoCal.  This painting was completed on an 11 X 14 Strathmore Bristol Vellum using primarily Terry Ludwig, and Unisons.  I love the deep color of these products and their softness.  Not so good for small details, but great for landscapes.  Enjoy!
