Usually, I do my “almost daily sketches” in ink, but this time I laid down some watercolor and inked on top. This makes the picture more illustrative than a “true” watercolor, but I’ve always had fun with this. Enjoy

Pastel Challenge #71
Yes, it’s time to get back to the challenge. This is pastel #71 and I WILL finish 100 in 2012!
For those new to this blog site, I joined a challenge quite a while back that was on Wet Canvas. The idea was to force yourself out of the rut you “may” be in of using the same colors for the same or similar objects. We set our own rules and went to work…..well, most of us….well, some of us did. I think I took a break around 50 or so. Anyway, my rules were that all pictures were to be 5 X 7″, done within 30 minutes with each one being different in some way. If you look back on earlier postings, you’ll see some very strange landscapes, but that was the whole point. This one was not so different, telling me that I need to get back to working with unfamiliar color schemes. I hope you enjoy the trip!

Country Living – A Process Study
This is a 9 X 12″ pastel on Fabriano paper. It’s been awhile since I’ve done a process study. I hope you enjoy seeing the steps to the finish. I usually start with a rough sketch in a neutral color to decide placement of objects, etc.
Next I work on the sky. I know a lot of artists leave the sky to the last, but, for me, it sets the tone of the scene.
Now it’s time o start adding color and painting the objects.
I always work top to bottom and then later go back and add or change the interior items I’m not satisfied with.
Finally, the bottom half is completed and any corrections are made…..actually, I made several to the buildings!
As usual, any comments are more than welcome. I think I’d like to spend a little time at this farm.

Watercolor Peony
Well, not working in watercolor for several weeks really shows up to me. This is a 5 X 8 done on sketchpad paper rather than watercolor paper, but it didn’t buckle too badly as I had applied masking tape around the edges. We’ll see how it goes. Comments are always welcome!

Pastel Pond
I’ve been doing a lot of sketching lately and will post them soon, however the pastel bug bit me good this week. I started this Tuesday and I “think” I finished it tonight, however living with it for a day or two may induce me to make some changes as I’m not thoroughly happy with it. We’ll see….I go back and make changes to paintings all the time. This is an 8″ X 12″ on Canson paper using mostly Unisons and Ludwig pastels.
Below are a couple of shots showing my usual way of working. First, very loosely drawing in area with a pastel pencil and then with landscapes working mostly from top to bottom. Then I go back and start changing, adding or subtracting items and color. I was aiming for a very loose image which I think this qualifies. In fact, I’m thinking I may go in and sharpen some detail.
Enjoy and please comment if you wish!
In start with the sky in landscapes as it is the source of light and all else follows.

Almost Daily Sketches
Just a couple of quick sketches to get back in the groove. Each was done on my Canson 3 X 5″ sketch pad. Hope you enjoy!

Yellow Roses
I’ve been feeling the urge to get back into watercolor. This was done on a 7 X 10 Cotman watercolor pad with transparent MaimeriBlu watercolors. It’s so hot here today that I had to paint something “light”.
Enjoy

More Almost Daily Sketches
Two more 3″ X 5″ sketches done with Micron Pen on sketchbook pad I carry with me all the time. My motto is: when in doubt, draw plants and flowers.
Enjoy

More Almost Daily Sketches
I found some daily sketches that I hadn’t posted. These were done at various times last year. As usual, they were done with a Micron pen on the small 3 X 5 sketchbook I carry in my purse. You never know when the muse might hit.
Enjoy.
