Doodle Tres

Without ink outline and details

With ink outline and details

Well, as I planned, I got out my old set of regular Derwent Watercolor Pencils and and used them for this third and last exercise.  I have to admit that the colors from the Inktense set were, in fact, brighter, both going onto the paper and as the water was applied.  I had to work harder to get as much color as I was aiming for using the regular set.   In the middle of the exercise, it occurred to me that I really should have done these on watercolor paper to have a true test.  In the future, when I decide to complete something using w/c pencils, I’ll run a short test on probably 140 lb paper and see what the difference is.

I still have a problem, however, with the Inktense lead color not representing the final color well.  It really means making up a sample sheet with the colors and their names for future use and filling in several colors that weren’t represented in the set that I got  (like a true red, for instance).

Well, this was a fun exercise and I hope you enjoyed my efforts.  Any questions about what I did (or anything else, of course, are more than welcome!)   Enjoy!

Well, this is also a doodle using watercolor pencils, but this time no ink.   I had been given a set of Derwent Inktense watersoluble ink pencils, but had never used them.   It’s been awhile since I used watercolor pencils, so I’m not sure so much what the difference is.   So, I guess I’ll have to get out the regular ones and see what that might be.   The advertising I’ve seen for them praises their intense bright colors.   I’m not that sure just doing these last two.   Maybe I’ll have time tomorrow to try something with my regular set and see if they are right.  I have to say that the colors that show in the lead don’t translate well after water is added.   We’ll see.     (I used my 5-1/2 X 8-1/2 sketch pad……which is not watercolor paper, so I thought I’d have the photo include the taped edges I use to try and control buckling when the water is applied.

Just a doodle

I’ve been very busy and not even taking time to doodle until today………This was done with watercolor pencils and brown stylist pen in my handy sketch book.

Usually, I do my “almost daily sketches” in ink, but this time I laid down some watercolor and inked on top.   This makes the picture more illustrative than a “true” watercolor, but I’ve always had fun with this.     Enjoy

Since it is a holiday, I took even less time to devote to this, the 74th in the series of 100 pastels done on 5″ X 7″ paper with a time limit of 30 minutes………I wonder if the people who started this challenge oh so long ago even remember it.  We’ll see.   I’ll post my 100th on Wet Canvas and see who responds.   (But, of course, I still have 26 to go!)

It is so hot here today, I just had to do something that made me feel the wind in my face and lots and lots of room.  This s a 9″ X 11″ pastel on Fabriano Paper.

This past weekend was the Spring Art Show for the Lakewood Artists Guild.  Unfortunately, attendance was down just a bit….but everything seems to be suffering these days.  We had a great time hanging the paintings on Friday evening and Saturday morning.  The doors were closed Saturday afternoon to allow the judge to view all the many entries and choose winners in several categories.   One wonderful outcome of the show was the children’s art which was at least double previous years.

I entered two pastels and won Honorable Mention for “The Country Life”.  Both can be seen here and in earlier posts.  I have to admit it’s encouraging to see your work hanging in a roomful of art!   Enjoy!

The Country Life

The Red Barn

This time, I made things different by putting my hand on a pastel and then moving to another.   Weird, but that’s what the challenge is all about.

This is the weekend for the Lakewood Artist Guild’s Spring Show.  I will be entering 2 pastels.   Less than previous years, but it’s been a busy time and I decided to take the stress off.     They only have separate categories if there are at least 7 paintings in the same medium, such as watercolor.   If there are fewer than 7, then those are all lumped together in a general category.  In past years, there have always been fewer than 7 pastels, so I get judged along with drawings, mixed-media, etc.

We’ll see what happens this year.  Pastel is becoming more popular across the country, but I’m not aware of anyone in the guild besides myself that works in it on a regular basis.   Must make decisions hard for the judge!

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Thought I’d try to get another one done before getting some pastel paintings framed for the Lakewood Artist Guild’s Spring Show this weekend.   Maybe I can get the 100 finished before the  Fall Show.   What do you think?     In this one, I picked up a box of various pastels that I had been using to complete a larger work and limited myself to what was in the box.   Remember, the goal is to use colors other than one’s we are used to picking up in order to get out of our ruts.  This one sort of does that.  Enjoy!

Yes, it’s time to get back to the challenge.   This is pastel #71 and I WILL finish 100 in 2012!

For those new to this blog site, I joined a challenge  quite a while back that was on Wet Canvas.  The idea was to force yourself out of the rut you “may” be in of using the same colors for the same or similar objects.   We set our own rules and went to work…..well, most of us….well, some of us did.  I think I took a break around 50 or so.   Anyway, my rules were that all pictures were to be 5 X 7″, done within 30 minutes with each one being different in some way.   If you look back on earlier postings, you’ll see some very strange landscapes, but that was the whole point.  This one was not so different, telling me that I need to get back to working with unfamiliar color schemes.     I hope you enjoy the trip!
