El Moro Ranch

10 X 12 ink sketch

I’m going to move the buildings closer to the center and “maybe” get rid of the large tree on the right before I start to paint this.   I took this picture many  years ago pulling off the road to Moro Bay.  I’ll probably just redo this in “thumbnail” size before sketching it lightly onto the final pastel paper.  I’m thinking of making it an autumn scene.

Just an ink sketch of a photo.  Too bad I have a tree growing out of a fence post!

Portrait #1 – Andrew (practice)

This is my first attempt at doing a portrait (from a photo) using graphite (actually a #2 pencil) and smoothing the marks with tortillions (rolled paper sticks with points).  I want to do as many of these as I need to become comfortable with the likeness.  Then I’ll do the final portrait in pastel.   Little Andrew is watched by his Grandfather Alex next door and is just a delight.

This is REALLY MESSY, but fun to do….I just kept throwing paint and water on and pretending it looked like something!  Very liberating.

Flowers: A Progress Study

Here’s a progress study!

I took an earlier drawing of the tulips done in flair pen and water and did it  again using the traditional pen and ink drawing method.

Here are the steps:

03-progress-01

Tulip sketch was traced onto heavier watercolor paper and a very diluted wash of india ink was started.

03-progress-02

First light wash was completed.

03-progress-03

Second layer of wash was added into some areas for contrast and modeling.

03-progress-04

Drawing was completed over the wash layer using full-strength india ink and both a bamboo pen and a mediam dip pen.
