Well, not working in watercolor for several weeks really shows up to me. This is a 5 X 8 done on sketchpad paper rather than watercolor paper, but it didn’t buckle too badly as I had applied masking tape around the edges. We’ll see how it goes. Comments are always welcome!

This may look strange to those who haven’t been following the blog long (and I’ve been gone awhile), but what it represents is a challenge that was made on a pastel forum on Wet Canvas (so long ago, I’m embarrassed to say). The idea was to loosen up by doing small pastels very quickly and purposely choosing colors that you wouldn’t actually use if you were going for the best. We set our own perimeters and mine were 5 X 7, done in 30 minutes or less. I have to say it is fun to pick out a color that makes you groan and then use it.
If you scroll down through the blog, you’ll see what I mean. Now, since I’ve taken so long to do this (I’ll usually do 3 or 4 and then go back to normal painting, I think I may have miss counted. I have all of these 5 X 7s taped onto large cardboard sheets and out of the way of little dogs, etc. But, I’ll check them all before I raise the flag!!

I just realized that I haven’t been working on the 100 Pastel Challenge lately. So, here is #66 & 67. I think I’d better get going to finish in 2012. What do you think?

Well, as you can see, I’ve made a few changes to this pastel. I really felt that the bottom needed more attention and that the color sets off the barn much better. Since this is a process blog, I can’t promise this is the final version. I always have to live with paintings for awhile to truly feel satisfied. The danger, of course, is going to far. But then, that’s what learning is all about, isn’t it?
I hope you enjoy this version.

When I was a little girl, I grew up in the country outskirts of Roseburg, Oregon. Nearby our house were several fields just being left fallow, filled with bushes and wild grass and perfect places to play with our dog. Up a slight slope in the nearest field was an abandoned barn and climbing it’s ladders and using my imagination to think up stories wasn’t a bad way to spend time. This barn is actually painted from a photo taken on one of my husband and my cross-country trips. It doesn’t really look like the childhood barn, but close enough.
It was completed on Fabriano Tiziano pastel paper (8/1/4 X 11 3/4) using my usual mixture of Unison, Ludwig, Sennelier and Rembrandt.
I have to say that I’m not really excited about my results on the Fabriano paper and would love to see comments from anyone else that uses it.

I’ve been doing a lot of sketching lately and will post them soon, however the pastel bug bit me good this week. I started this Tuesday and I “think” I finished it tonight, however living with it for a day or two may induce me to make some changes as I’m not thoroughly happy with it. We’ll see….I go back and make changes to paintings all the time. This is an 8″ X 12″ on Canson paper using mostly Unisons and Ludwig pastels.
Below are a couple of shots showing my usual way of working. First, very loosely drawing in area with a pastel pencil and then with landscapes working mostly from top to bottom. Then I go back and start changing, adding or subtracting items and color. I was aiming for a very loose image which I think this qualifies. In fact, I’m thinking I may go in and sharpen some detail.
Enjoy and please comment if you wish!
In start with the sky in landscapes as it is the source of light and all else follows.

Pastel on Sennelier Pastel Paper using primarily Unisons, Ludwig and Rembrandt pastels and based “quite” loosely on a photo taken some years ago in Arizona. Seems like I’ve been concentrating mostly on pastel landscapes, so I’m determined to get back to what this blog was originally for……and that was to try different materials and subjects and just have fun. Haven’t decided what the next one will be, but I promise it will be different!
Enjoy!
